Sunday 22 September
An enthusiastic team of 19 Maldon Petanque Club players ventured over to Avoca to defend The Rusty Poppet Head Trophy against our old adversaries and friends, the Pyrenees PC.
The Pyrenees Club received the Golden Boule Trophy last weekend, however as we have not been playing our best away from home  lately,  we were hoping they might be a wee bit over-confident. There were to be 2 rounds before lunch and 2 after lunch with 9 teams of doubles representing each club.
After round 1, Maldon was up by 2 games, at lunch we were up by 3. After lunch in round 3 we dropped back to lead by 2 again. Could we hold on?   The last round brought out some very competitive play with Pyrenees fighting back to equalise the number of games won.
To get a result George and Susan had to tally the points scored by each club for the day. The final result showed Maldon had just got over the line.
Our thanks go to Pyrenees PC for their hospitality and the spirit in which the games were played.
Next Sunday it is back to St Brigid’s pistes for our regular fortnightly games starting at 1.00pm

Last Saturday morning a small contingent of Maldonites travelled to Ballarat for the wind-up of the Golden Boule Round Robin competition. The day started at 9.30am with social games which had only just started before the skies began to drizzle and turn into rain. Fortunately,  by the start of the second game, the sun made an appearance.  The winner of the Golden Boule Trophy for 2024 were our friends and neighbours, Pyrenees Petanque Club. We all celebrated their win with a fine BBQ lunch and good social interaction.
Sunday saw an excellent number turn up for our regular fortnightly games on the St Brigid’s pistes. It was cold but nowhere as cold as Ballarat; even so the fire was lit and appreciated by all. After three rounds of spirited play, the computer, which was behaving itself, told us the winner for the day was Gerry Marthe with 3 wins 28 points followed by Chris Pryzgoda 3 wins 18 points and Sue Ackland 2 wins 21 points.
On Thursday 19 September we plan to have a working bee at 2pm, weather permitting, to attack the spring growth of weeds and do our routine maintenance of the piste area.
The club is now has a professional First Aid kit from Rhythm First Aid of Maldon - let’s hope we don’t need it!
