The 2025 Forster Cup

26/5/2025

This great photo by legendary press photographer Rob Leeson says it all - smiles all round!
Seventy-two players plus supporters gathered last Saturday in the grounds of St Brigid’s to compete in the Maldon Petanque Club’s annual Mixed Triples tournament.  The winners - Stephane and Muriel Langlois and Chris Serre - took home  $600 in prize money and will have their names engraved on the trophy.
Played in cool but sunny weather, competition was keen as some of the best players from Melbourne and regional clubs played five games each.  The Forster Cup is one of many tournaments held across the state, and is always fully booked, with a waiting list of teams hoping for a cancellation. “Why wouldn’t you come and play in Maldon?” was one player’s comment.  “It’s a beautiful town that we love to visit, it’s a friendly club and it’s a really well-organised event.”

11th May games.

11/5/2025

Once again it was a pleasure to welcome a large number of players from other clubs, who almost out-numbered the locals.  All that influx of experience and talent made for great pétanque, with tough, tight games.  However the Maldon flag was flown by Viv, who won her three games decisively and took first place.
For those who enjoy the Thursday practice sessions, please note that we’re switching them to “winter time” and they will now start at 3 p.m.

Autumn Challenge.  Maldon v  U3A Castlemaine

10/5/2025

It was a beautiful autumn day with multi coloured foliage at the. Castlemaine U3A pistes on Friday.  The long-standing Autumn Challenge was won by Maldon, 9 games to 3.  Spirited friendly competition was the order of the day and our thanks to U3A for the delicious post-games afternoon tea.  Thanks also to Esther, Maxine & Wendy from the Bendigo club who filled out our numbers.
We’re looking forward to hosting the Spring Challenge.

Sunday 27 April club games

27/4/2025

Players from no less than six other clubs joined in our games on Sunday - Pyrenees, Grampians, Bendigo, Smythesdale, Mount Macedon and Terri from the Hobart club. Despite this influx of foreign talent, Maldon’s Chris Przygoda took the honours for the day.  Congratulations Chris!
May will be a busy month with the NW Region Challenge in Ballarat next Sunday, the Autumn competition against U3A Castlemaine on the 9th, our Forster Cup Mixed Triples on the 24th and the first round of the Golden Boule  on the 31st.
In between are our regular club games on the 11th and 25th.

Sunday 13th April

14/4/2025

Gerry arrived early on Sunday with a lunch to share with Antoine, Viv and Andrew.   What a lunch!  Pear cider from Brittany, baguettes, pork & pistachio terrine, rabbit rillettes, mergeuez sausages, cheeses and a strawberry liqueur to round out un délicieux déjeuner (a splendid lunch!)  As the last of the liqueur  slipped down, there was unanimous agreement that it was the ONLY way to ease into a game of pétanque!
A warning to other clubs -  beware of travellers! On Sunday we were pleased to welcome Wendy from the Bendigo club, Antoine, a fair dinkum Frenchman who has been working in the wine industry in Avoca, and Gerry “French Connection”. Marthe who travelled from his Smythesdale terrain.  The two French marauders took 2nd and 3rd place on the day, but were upstaged by another traveller - Daryl from the Grampians club.  Not only was Daryl the only 3 game winner, he took the prize for “first out of the hat”.
The club has a number of inter-club competitions in May: the  Autumn Challenge against Castlemaine U3A on Friday 9 May,  our annual tournament, the Forster Cup, on Saturday 24 May and Round 1 of the Golden Boule round robin at Gisborne on Saturday 31 May.
Our next games will be on Sunday 27 April at 1pm on the St Brigid’s pistes. All welcome, as you are to training/practice on every Thursday at 4pm.

Sunday games 30th March.

1/4/2025

Picture
Sunday’s games attracted a number of visitors, two-legged and four-legged.  Alice (Lynette and Laurie’s collie) was her usual enthusiastic self, but we also were delighted to see this self-assured echidna ambling past the pistes before burrowing into a nearby pile of branches.
Of the two-legged variety, it was a great pleasure to welcome David Shaw for his first games with us.  An experienced player and highly qualified umpire, David was soon besieged with requests for interpretations and rulings of some finer points of pétanque rules.  Welcome David, we’ll try to back off with the questions and let you just play the game!
We were also joined by Elizabeth (aka EC) for her first club games.  EC has played with Maldon’s Sociable Pétanque group for some time and blended in seamlessly, winning her first game 13-0!
And another visitor enjoying his first games with us was Dennis from the Bendigo Petanque group, who was presented with one of the club’s house wines, the formidable Whiplash White.
Only three players won their three games, Susan in first place followed by Andrew and Jenny.
